Losing a salesperson should not mean losing the customer record
A salesperson leaving should not mean the customer relationship leaves too. It does, whenever the customer record lives on a phone instead of in the business.
In plenty of small businesses, the customer relationship lives on one person's phone: their WhatsApp thread, their memory of what was promised, their instinct for when to follow up. That arrangement works fine, right up until that person resigns and takes it with them.
Own the record, not just the relationship
The fix is not asking staff to be more loyal, or asking to see their phone. It is making sure the facts about a customer, what they bought, what they were promised, when they are due a follow-up, live somewhere the business owns. The relationship can stay personal. The record cannot be one employee's property.
Ask where your customer list actually lives right now, not where it is supposed to live.
